Weldon's School Outfit for Girls

This didn’t have it’s free pattern anymore when I bought it, but it’s fabulous to look at the thirties designs. I’m dating it as thirties because of the waists with belts, rather than a dropped waist of the twenties. These may have been designed as school wear, but young girls wore the same as young and middle aged women. It is in the British Library catalogue under the name you can see in tiny letters in the top right, as Weldon’s Transfer Series. Issue 1 came out in 1923 and the final issue was 139 in 1936. Each had a different topic and a free embroidery transfer and often a free sewing pattern, but essentially it just advertised the other sewing patterns you could buy by post.

This is my person copy, which was found at the fabulous Retromania near Victoria Station in London, which is actually a charity shop for Fara (who help marginalised young people and children in Romani & began after the famous TV news footage on the state of orphanages in Romania in 1991). Everything at Retromania is vintage and they often have amazing designer labels or boutique labels like Bus Stop and fabric in the basement. When sewing patterns come in they go pretty quickly. You can follow them on Instagram.
